South River Studio is a one man wood shop. I design and build custom cabinets and furniture; woodturnings; church and liturgical furnishings on a commission basis. I also make cremation urns.
The creative process starts for me when I establish a friendship with my clients, getting to know them in their home or worship environment. I do not try to impose a signature look or style in my creations. I build to suit my client's needs and the style of the furnishings next to which the commissioned piece will be situated. My challenge as an artisan is to master designing and building objects in any style and with any species of wood or finish.
I am pleasantly surprised when a person tells me that they saw one of my pieces in someone's home. When I ask how they knew it was mine, they say that no one told them I made it but there is a recognizable 'something' in my work when they see it.
My core artistic inspiration springs from the natural beauty of the rural countryside where I live with my artist wife Virginia Lloyd-Davies. Our studios are located between Fairfield and Lexington, VA, home of Washington & Lee University and Virginia Military Institute.
